THE SIGN OF THE CROSS (Paramount, 1932), staring Claudette Colbert and directed by Cecil B. DeMille, returned its director to the genre to what he's best known: the religious spectacle. Here, a beautiful woman is lashed naked to a post much like Fay Wray, as a huge ape approaches menacingly. The original uncut The Sign of the Cross disappeared from view for almost sixty years. Due to its nudity and violent perversity, the show was withdrawn from exhibition when Production Code enforcement began in 1934, and when reissued in 1935, it was heavily cut.
Whether it's writing novels, directing TV, reviving Art Deco or colorizing Silver Screen Stars, my jobs have always been on the creative side.
